In the 2000s, bioceramics were designed with porous structure bearing a micro- porosity equivalent to bone in an attempt to improve their efficiency for bone tissue regeneration, giving rise to mesoporous materials and organic-inorganic hybrids.
However, this technol- ogy has also been developed for the production of organic-inorganic hybrids, as will be detailed later, because the process allows the production of these materials with no thermal degradation of the inorganic content.
1.4.2 organiC-inorganiC hyBrids
Organic-inorganic hybrid materials represent a relatively novel area of materials sci- ence that offers promising solutions to biomedical engineering, such as the ability to bond to osseous tissues or to host molecules with biological activity (Vallet-Reg and Arcos 2006).
Within implantable materials for bone tissue, organic-inorganic hybrids have been designed to combine the excellent bioactive properties of sol-gel glasses together
